Small molecule
: Powerful molecular tool to regulate cellular bioactivity
Direct binding between small molecule and protein modulates protein structure, resulting in regulation of protein function. This biological effect is reversible and tunable compared to the classical genomic approch. This novel approach is called "Chemical Genomics". We believe that such an approach has the potential to regulate organelle interaction at the molecular level.
Benefits of bioactive small molecules
1. Rapid
2. Spatially controlled & monitored
3. Tunable (phenotype expression)
4. Biological effect is reversible
5. Initiated during the development of an organism
6. Performed gain-of-function and loss-of-function studies
7. Same probe can be used for studies in different species
8. Easy reproducibility for everyone
Our Story
We, Chemical Genomic Laboratory (led by PI Prof. Ho Jeong KWON), found a series of bioactive small molecules to improve various pathologies such as angiogenesis, tumorigenesis, atherosclerosis. Not only did we also find phenotypic improvement, we also identified the target binding protein and the underlying mechanism of each small molecule.
